Review | Changeling & The Unready Queen by William Ritter

A very small part of me is like: YOU ARE AN ADULT! You shouldn’t be THIS giddy over a middle-grade fantasy!

But most of me is like: SQUUUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

What’s it about?

Book 1 – Changeling – is a story about mothers, brothers, and found families. Cole and Tinn are identical twins with a not-so-secret. One of them — though, nobody knows which one — is a goblin changeling.

This was a re-read for me, and — if possible — I walked away loving it even more than before. It’s a fun, whimsical, fast-paced romp with all the makings of a great story. (Witches! Goblins! Bears! Oh my!)

Book 2 – The Unready Queen – picks up a few months after the events of Changeling. While there’s still a strong focus on family, the heart of this book is on growth and finding your own way — and the strength it takes to do that.

While we still get lots of Cole and Tinn time, the primary focus of this book is Fable — and her struggles with assuming the role of Queen of the Deep Dark. She starts the book as spunky and naΓ―ve … and, she’s still very much that at the end. But, she’s also courageous, responsible, confident, and revolutionary. It’s a really wonderful thing to witness.

Predictions for Book 3 – Book 1 was about Tinn, Book 2 was about Fable … My guess is that Book 3 will be about Cole and his dad. (Which really has me curious on how Tinn is going to fit into his family at the end.)

Things I liked:

Kids who behave like kids. This is a book about 13-year-olds who behave like 13-year-olds. And, it’s a book that has total and utter respect for those 13-year-olds.

Tinn and Cole. Good god, I love these guys. I could probably read a dozen books about these two and not get bored. The thought of them starting to grow apart makes my heart hurt a little.

The Humour. he he he. Quebec.

Things I disliked:

The romance. I think? Evie is a great character, but the romance twist wasn’t really working for me.

Favourite quote:

You need to feel the roots beneath you and come to know where you stand.

Final thoughts:

1) UUUGGGHHHH! I seriously have to wait an entire year for the next book to come out?!

2) UUUGGGHHHH! Can someone please write an amazing fanfiction of Cole and Tinn in their 20s?

3) Read this book.

4) No. Really. If you’re looking for a wholesome, fun, easy, and whimsy-filled read … this is the series for you. Read this book.

5) Can Book #3 please give us some more details about this … brood ceremony thing? Seriously. I’m fascinated.
