2021 | Best Funny-Thoughtful

Hands down, today’s award goes to The Little Trashmaid – a web comic and commentary on ocean pollution. It handles a super serious topic with gravity, grace, and humour. (And, hey! It’s short and free! You should really go read it!)

TBR Thursdays | The Burning God by R. F. Kuang

TBR Thursday is a weekly meme where I randomly select (then chat about) a book on my TBR shelf. This week, my book is …

Book #5 – The Burning God by R. F. Kuang

After saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead.

Despite her losses, Rin hasn’t given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so much—the people of the southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home. Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challenges—and unexpected opportunities. While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realizes that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation.

Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonizing Hesperians, and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners. As her power and influence grows, though, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenix’s intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it?

Why did I TBR it?

I read – and became obsessed with – The Poppy War a few years back. There was no way that I was going to miss out on The Dragon Republic (Book #2) or The Burning God (Book #3). Insta-TBR.

… the best laid plans.

I’m in a really bad habit of starting a series – telling myself I’ll wait until all the books are released – and then never returning to finish things off. Because of this, I’ve set a goal to complete twelve series in 2022. Mood-dependent, the list looks like:

  1. Cursebreakers
  2. Throne of Glass
  3. Southern Reach
  4. The Memoirs of Lady Trent
  5. Bone Grace
  6. The Illuminae Files
  7. Witchlands
  8. Kingdoms of Sand and Sky
  9. Lies of Locke Lamora
  10. The Bone Season
  11. Crazy Rich Asians
  12. Sands of Arawiya
