You know when you find a great book, and you simultaneously cannot finish fast enough … but also never ever want it to end?
Cue: Betrayals. I can’t believe there’s only one book left in my Cainsville re-read.
What’s it about?
Several months have passed since the events of Deceptions. Olivia and Ricky have returned from their motorcycle trip, and Olivia is back to work with Gabriel … though, things are far from what they once were. Relationships remained strained — and Gabriel, in particular, continues to struggle with his role as the not-really-reincarnated Gwynn.
Ricky, Olivia, and Gabriel are forced back together when a new wave of murders hits Chicago —
Somebody is killing fae.
Youth social workers have been murdered.
Three girls who live on the street have gone missing.
A hound of Arawan appears in the inner city — abused, and possibly abandoned. (And readers finally get some background on the CΕ΅n Annwn / Wild Hunt.)
Fae alliances are put to the test.
And Olivia is struck with visions of strange, snake-like women.
i.e., just a regular day in Cainsville.
Things I liked:
All that I’ve liked before … And there is so much to like.
Ricky. Ricky is a great character — in so, so many ways — but this is the book where he really comes into is own. Charming, mature, thoughtful, and selfless.
What I Didnβt Like
Where is Olivia’s mother? Like, sure. They don’t have the greatest relationship. But your daughter has just been stabbed – drowned – severely concussed – and hypothermic. And she doesn’t even get a phone call?!
The concussion … Speaking of medical woes, there are a lot of really severe injuries in this series that miraculously heal. As someone who’s experienced a severe concussion, you don’t just get up and go running after bad guys the next day … you lie in bed, asleep, downing pain medications whenever you blearily struggle to consciousness.
Favourite Quote:
It did not matter whether he thought she was in mortal danger or simply falling, certain to survive. She fell and he followed.
