Review | The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin

0735213186DNF at page 50.

I placed The Immortalists on my TBR list because of its fascinating dust-cover description: New York, 1969. Four siblings visit a psychic, who reveals the dates of their deaths. How does this knowledge shape the rest of their lives?

Spooky idea, hey? I thought so.

Reality: Immortalists was a slog. I happily ditched at page 50.

The writing is jagged, lifeless, and utterly without humour. The tense is bizarre. A potentially-wonderful theme is buried by ridiculous prose and unnecessary tangents. (I don’t care about a brown, Sicilian donkey called Antonio.) There are lots of cliche ideas about self-fulfilling prophecies, freedom vs. fate, etc.

Conclusion: Contemporary fiction is still not my genre.
